The town of Colorado City was founded in 1859. Originally called Eldorado, the name was changed in 1860. Colorado City was a vibrant frontier town, and at one time more than twenty saloons and brothels existed between 24th and 28th Streets. All of the saloons were located on the south side of the street, and tunnels were dug below Colorado Avenue to allow "upstanding" citizens to cross over to the south side undetected. Our building was erected in 1895, and one such tunnel ran from our basement to the "wet" side of the street. |
