Although less well-known than some
other varieties, these wines offer a taste of something
new—often with extremely positive results. From
France to Italy to California, these grapes represent
the best of the local “terroir” and should
not be missed.

Riesling – one of the world’s great white wine grapes.
Best represented in the classic wines of Germany, it also achieves
brilliance in Alsace and Austria.
Dry or sweet, its high acidity and distinctive floral, citrus, peach
and mineral accents have won Riesling many fans. This grape continues
to reach new heights in such places as Washington State and the
Clare Valley of Australia.

Sauvignon Blanc grows well in a variety of appellations.
It marries well with oak Semillon and many vintners are adding a
touch of Chardonnay for extra body. The wine drinks best in its
youth but sometimes will benefit from short term cellaring. As late-harvest
wine it’s often fantastic, capable of yielding amazingly complex
and richly flavored wines.

As Cabernet Sauvignon is the king of reds, Chardonnay
is the king of whites, making consistently rich and complex wines.
This is an amazingly versatile grape
that grows well through the world. In Burgundy, it is used for the
exquisite whites, such as, Montrachet, Meursault, and Pouilly-Fuisse,
and true Chablis; in Champagne,
it becomes Blanc de Blanc. Among the many other countries that have
caught Chardonnay fever, Australia is especially strong.

Pinot Noir is a classic grape of red burgundy,
whose greatest wines are concentrated in the east and south-east-facing
limestone hills of Burgundy’s Cote d’Or. This thin skinned
grape is a notoriously temperamental variety, earning it the moniker
“the heartbreak grape.” When its good, its very good…

Syrah is quintessentially Mediterranean-climate
variety, producing dark, inky, aromatic reds with black fruit flavors
and peppery, spicy characteristics.
It is the red grape of the northern Rhone, a component of Southern
Rhone reds and the fastest growing grape in France’s Languedoc
region. As Shiraz, its Australia’s most important red varietal
and is grown with increasing confidence in South Africa and Argentina.

Zinfandel is a near-native grape of California,
where at its best; it produces powerfully constructed, brambly,
spicy reds. The Italian grape, Primativo, is widely considered to
be the ancient precursor to modern-day Zinfandel. Both have recently
undergone a major revival, with stellar efforts being put forth
by the new & established vintners.

Merlot achieved growing popularity in the last
decade of the 20th century thanks to the worship of certain Merlot-based
Pomerols and Saint Emilions in Bordeaux,
as well as growing it for its lusciously plumy and flavorsome early-drinking
delights in countries such as Chile and the US. With its soft texture,
pronounced fruit flavors and mellow tannins, Merlot is attracting
red wine drinkers from across the globe.

Famous, fabulous and fabled, Cabernet Sauvignon
is responsible for many of the world’s greatest wines and
is arguably, the grandest of all red wine varieties. Cabernet can
be herbaceous when a little unripe with capsicum notes, becoming
black currant or cassis-like often with cedary, musky and spicy
qualities. Its deep-colored, assertive tannins and affinity to oak
allow these wines to improve in the bottle over years, if not decades.
